Distribution

Ceratophrys stolzmanni is distributed in xeric environments in northwestern Peru (Tumbes) and in the Gulf of Guayaquil, Ecuador (Guayas and Manabí provinces).

 
     
 

Habitat and biology

Some specimens have been collected in open, sandy deserts, with low vegetation and scattered trees, which are mostly absent except in the vicinity of temporary streams (Peters, J. A. 1967.Peters, J. A. 1967). They live under the ground when they are not breeding. Reproduction is explosive and it happens during the rainy season.

 
     
 

Conservation status

Vulnerable (IUCN, et al. 2004.IUCN, et al. 2004)

It use to be very rare, but it was registered in 2002 in Ecuador. Their main threats are habitat destruction and degradation, urban and suburban development, plus ranching and livestock activities. Agrochemicals in the soil can also be seen as a threat.
